There are several different types of countertops available to the consumer these days.  All of your choices come with advantages and disadvantages.  Here is a list of some of the most popular types of countertops available:

Granite Countertops

Advantages:

• Holds up extremely well to heat
• Defines elegance in the kitchen
• Available in almost 3000 colors
• Lasts a lifetime
• High resale value
• 2nd highest hardness rating after diamonds

Disadvantages

• Will dull knives if you cut on it
• Can crack or stress if improperly installed
• Requires periodic sealing

Marble Countertops

Advantages:

• Waterproof
• Heatproof
• Luxurious look

Disadvantages:

• Porous
• Stains easily unless professionally sealed
• Can scratch
• Needs resealing periodically

Engineered Stone (Quartz) Countertops

Advantages:

• Resistant to stain and acid
• Easy to care for

Solid Surface Countertops

Advantages:

• Comes in many colors and patterns
• Seamless
• Stain resistant
• Scratches can be sanded out

Disadvantages:

• Vulnerable to hot pans which can damage the surface

Laminate Countertops

Advantages:

• Comes in a variety of colors
• Low maintenance
• Durable
• Inexpensive

Disadvantages:

• Scratches and chips are almost impossible to repair
• Seams show

Wood or Butcher Block Countertops

Advantages:

• Easy to clean
• Can be sanded and resealed as necessary

Disadvantages:

• Can be damaged by water and stains over time
• Scratches must be oiled and sealed according to manufacturer’s instructions

Advantages:

• Holds up well to hot pans
• Easy to clean
• Wide range of price, color, texture, and design

Disadvantages:

• Counter surface is uneven
• Tiles can be easily chipped or cracked
• Grout lines become stained over time

Stainless Steel Countertops

Advantages:

• Very contemporary looking
• Holds  up well to hot pans
• Easy to clean

Disadvantages:

• May dent
• Fabrication is expensive
• You cannot cut on it
• Noisy
